Sostrup Slot & Kloster

Our history

A Renaissance Castle and a Cistercian Monastery

Sostrup Castle was built in 1606 by Sophie Bille.
It was a Cistercian monastery from 1960 until 2013. The formidable Heart of Mary Monastery and church was built in 1992.

The ag buildings and stables around the grand courtyard were renovated by the nuns in the 60’ies and turned into cozy holiday apartments. The combination of the three building complexes is unique and a reminder of Sostrup’s colorful and contrasting history. Extravagant nobility, Scheel, Seefeldt & Bille and Benzon, refugee camp after World War 2, colorful boarding school, Cistercian nuns and now Swift.

Whether it has been tough women, eccentric noblemen, or quiet nuns who have lived at Sostrup, they have all left their mark on Sostrup – marks that make the place what it is today, and which we protect and cherish. We feel the silence of the nuns during retreats, and we embrace the extravagance of the nobility when life’s grand celebrations are held in the settings of Sostrup.

“With Heart & Soul, we welcome you all to Sostrup.”
